forex help! need to convert prior euro exchange to usd

I need to convert some revenue from 1991 (Franc, Marcs, etc) to current USD rates. I'm not sure if I should convert the revenue to euros when they split then convert to 2011 USD? Or go from 1991 Franc to 2011 USD? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Help Explain Buying and Selling Process

Hi all,
I'm wanting to teach my self a new skill and given my previous work experience in analysis feel Forex trading would be a good fit.
I'm working my way through Babypips (great site) and also some youtube videos to help break things down.
There's a couple of bits I can't quite get my head around and hoping someone can simplify it for me.
EUUSD
  1. If I believe that the Euro is going to fall against the USD then I would commit a "buy" order.
  2. If I believe that the USD is going to fall against the EUR then i'd Sell.
What I can't grasp is how do you make money in this process? If I buy at say 1.18612 and this then goes to 1.19000 how have I made 288pips?
Have I made this by having the trade open at 1.18612 and then closing it when it hits 1.19000? By selling does this make money in reverse?
Sorry if i've got this all wrong, just trying to get my head around it.
Thanks

Edit: Than you all for your replies, it's helped me understand a lot more and get my head around it!

Needless to say he blocked me straight away after I called him a disgraceful sc*m but hey..... I still called the corresponding banks, the UK Fraud Action and the FBI just to make sure and shared all of the details without any editting :)
Have fun "mate"! If they can freeze only 1 $ and return it to a likely victim, I am more then happy
Cheers dont get scammed!
TL/DR: Scammed a Nigerian scammer into sending me real accounts, names and details in UK and US (mules) to forward to the police and may or may not have donated 500 to charity.

What is the best way to hedge against inflation of the USD?

I'm hoping someone here can tell me the best way to hedge against the very real possiblity of USD inflation given infinite QE paradigm we are in and JPow ready to print trillions more dollars.
I'm thinking Euros and Swiss Francs. Also got some Gold and Silver, but those things will sell off hard if a correction (or crash) happens in order for investors to cover margin calls.
Would like some specifics (e g. comapnies/foreign banks that will let me open an account and transfer money into other currencies with minimal fees). I know I can go open a forex account, but I dont wanna pay taxes on any gains from simply trying to keep cash safe and its value stable.
Can some more experienced investors please shed some light on this.
P.S. I dont buy the narrative that we are in a deflationary period. Whether that is true or not, a devaluation of the dollar is creeping steadily upon the horizons IMO. I'm simply asking the best way to take up positions in stable currency/asset without getting boned by any capital gains tax or bogus fees/spreads on the spot price.

[Diplomacy] China-EU FTA

[Closed--as much as any trade negotiation with the EU can be]

The EU has slowly been extending its vast array of free trade agreements to cover much of the world, and, quite simply, China, as a member of our peaceful and prosperous rule-based international order, wants in.

This new FTA would massively expand the EUs zone of free trade, increasing it by nearly twenty trillion, as well as increasing our trade ties with the world by a roughly equivalent amount.

While we understand that developing this trade agreement will be a difficult and complex task, we have some thoughts on where to start:

European Concessions

Chinese Concessions

Joint Projects

These are really just a starting point, and we'd like to hear the EU's thoughts on this matter. Negotiating trade agreements with the EU is known to be difficult, but we think we may find it worthwhile.

TransferWise for foreign currency management

Has anyone here used Transferwise (https://transferwise.com/) to deal with foreign currencies? I'm living in the US but frequently get wire transfers in Euros and my bank (BoA) is devouring a huge chunk off the top. My most recent transfer (received payment) was about 10k euros on 8/31 and I lost like $500 of it because it's being converted at like 1.12 when really the euusd rate hasn't been below 1.17 since early august. I called BoA to ask why this discrepancy exists and they said it's due to the rate that the sending bank gives them, which I understand, but that means I have to contact the foreign bank and deal with them which is just annoying and I know they won't change it anyway. I checked on the sending bank's site and it seems they are sending at a rate of about 1.1533 which is closer to the real rate but still about $200 lower than it should be. Looking at Transferwise it seems to imply I can create an account and for a small conversion fee, get much closer to the real forex rate which would mean an extra $300-500/month depending on the size of the payment.
Has anyone used this and if it's not a good solution, how can I keep more of my money? Both sides (receiving and sending) are being shifted significantly from the actual market exchange rate (right now for example the BOA side is converting at 1.1214 for EUR -> USD and costs 1.2449 to go from USD -> EUR...The foreign sign is like 1.15 to go EUR->USD and 1.20 going the other way. Closer, but still not good. The current market rate is actually 1.1856 as we speak).

Should I hedge against USD? Is that even a hedge?

I'm in the following situation rn:
I live in Europe and pay in Euro for the necessary things in life. My personal investing / trading style is based all around US Equity. So practically 85 % of my wealth is either in $ Cash or in US Equity.
The USD is now down more than 7 % in comparison to the euro since the beginning of May. So I practically lost 7 % isn't it?
A few days ago I thought it would be smart to hedge against the currency risk through a simple forex broker in swiss where I have a leverage of 200. Since I did that the USD lost about 2 %, the trade I placed gained 2 %, exactly what I theoretically lost on the US side. The swaps I pay the broker for holding the forex position overnight are insignificantly small and with the 200 leverage, I don't need much capital to place the trade 1 to 1.
Now I'm a bit confused, I had recently a discussion with a friend who told me that what I was doing is nonsense and not a hedge at all. It's speculation on a weaker dollar and I would be dump to hold 85 % of my money in $ because I use € to pay the bills and everything.
But the point is that even if the USD got stronger, I would lose money on my forex position, but I would also "gain" money on my $ position I hold in my US brokerage. + - 0
Sorry if that a dumb question but do I make a thought error? Is the hedge reasonable and is it really that important to have my base currency as the standard living currency I use to pay bills?

What is Forex Trading and Forex Risks

FOREX (Foreign Exchange market) or FX, is a global trade advertise where stocks and offers are not exchanged, however money. The arrival for the financial specialist isn't in the estimation of the money as such, but instead the relative trade estimation of one cash against another money. In this way, Forex exchanging is constantly communicated two by two, for example, Euro/US Dollar (EUUSD) or US DollaJapanese Yen (USD/JPY).
By at the same time purchasing and selling sets of monetary forms, the financial specialist, or theorist, would like to benefit from an ideal swapping scale change. In contrast to the American stock trades, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System (NASDAQ), Forex exchanging is more unsurprising than stocks.
One procedure that the Forex speculator utilizes is a strategy that comes from the suspicion that all data about the market and a specific money's future variances is found in the value chain. As such, a speculator essentially sees what has befallen that money in the ongoing past, and predicts that the little changes will for the most part proceed with similarly as they have previously. Another methodology for the Forex financial specialist is to dissect the nation of the cash's economy, political circumstance, and other potential bits of gossip. The speculator can likewise foresee such things as political agitation or change that will likewise affect the market.
Forex is the biggest money related market on the planet taking care of somewhere in the range of 1.5 and 1.9 trillion US dollars daily. The mix of rather steady however little everyday vacillations in money costs, make a domain which pulls in financial specialists. In view of the liquidity of the market, in contrast to some once in a while exchanged stock, brokers can open and close situations inside a couple of moments as there are continually willing purchasers and venders.

What are the risks?

On account of the sheer size of the Forex Market, it guarantees more noteworthy value dependability and more noteworthy influence. Additionally, with worked in insurances, for example, well-being edges, programmed limits for purchasing and selling, and other hazard assurance quantify, the probability of winding up in the red in any event, when the Forex showcase is unpredictable is definitely diminished. Moreover, due to its size, it is close to unthinkable for a solitary financial specialist to fundamentally influence the cost of significant cash.
Be that as it may, all Forex merchants ought to know that the market is one of the most fluid around and subject to solid money patterns. While influence figures of up to100:1 are conceivable, without sufficient hazard insurance set up the hole among benefit and misfortune can be emotional. Indeed, even veteran Forex brokers can be gotten out every once in a while and endure huge shots. With this kind of speculator theory, the brilliant guideline must be: don't change beyond what you can bear to lose. Read more at Visit us on https://futurefx.com/

What Does Going Long or Short Mean?

Understanding Short Selling and Going Long
So now you have a basic idea of these two fundamental terms. But they are a bit more complex. What exactly does "buy low, sell high" and "sell high, buy low" mean? And how can traders profit off of each style?
Going Long: When a day trader goes long, they are buying into the market at a low point. The trader expects the market to rise, so that after the rise, they can sell the security back at a profit. In Forex trading, the buyer chooses a currency pair, for example GBP/USD. The trader is actually buying the first currency and then selling the second. So if that trader bought British pounds (GBP) and the price went up relative to U.S. dollars (USD), he or she would earn money on the trade. They would buy GBP low, in USD, and then sell the U.S. dollars back to gain more GBP.
Short: Short selling is just the opposite. But it often causes a bit of confusion for beginner traders. You might be wondering: How can I "sell high and buy low" when I don't actually own the security? Short selling requires a broker to lend you a security, say for instance EUUSD. In short selling, the trader is essentially selling the first currency and buying the second, with the hope that the market will fall. So, in this case, the trader would borrow euros from a broker and sell them at a specific price to buy USD. Then, after the market falls, the trader would buy back the borrowed euros with USD, ultimately pocketing the difference in value.
As you can see, short selling is a bit more complicated than going long, but both strategies are equally valuable to day traders. Depending on the movement of the market, either strategy can be used to profit, and traders who know how to successfully use both are in a better position to maximize their profit potential.

EUR/USD forecast: Euro doesn’t believe its luck

EUUSD forecast: Euro doesn’t believe its luck

Fundamental euro forecast for today

EUUSD bulls do not believe Christine Lagarde’s optimism

ECB is monitoring the euro exchange rate, but it is not willing to start a currency war now. Christine Lagarde expressed optimism about the euro-area economic recovery, the ECB president hasn’t signaled the further monetary easing in the near future. Lagarde’s speech should have encouraged the EUUSD bulls, but they didn’t believe the good news, so they didn’t go ahead. It looks like a catch. The ECB officials express concerns about the euro strengthening ahead of the Governing Council meeting, and, next, the ECB president sounds hawkish.
At the press conference, Christine Lagarde several times stressed that exchange rates and the euro appreciation were not the ECB policy target. However, the exchange rate was the most discussed topic at the Governing Council meeting in September. According to a Reuters source familiar with the matter, the ECB officials have agreed that the EUUSD rally resulted from a faster economic rebound in the euro area compared to the US growth, the Fed’s easy monetary policy, the increased confidence in the currency bloc due to the management of the pandemic fallout. Moreover, the upcoming presidential election in the US weighs on the US dollar. Bloomberg’s leading indicators signal that the GDP recovery is the fastest in Germany. After a temporary downturn in France, Italy, and Spain on concern about the second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak, the economic activity is gradually increasing. The UK, US, and Canada persistently lag behind.

Dynamics of the economic recovery

Source: Bloomberg
Four sources on the ECB's Governing Council told Reuters that the ECB acknowledges the negative effects of the euro's strength on inflation and growth, but the central bank is not willing to start a currency war. Speaking after the meeting, two sources said they saw $1.20 as not far from the equilibrium exchange rate at present. According to Citigroup, if the EUUSD is up by another 5%, the European Central Bank will take active measures. In the meanwhile, the regulator is carefully monitoring the exchange rates of the regional currency. The Governing Council policymakers at the meeting considered adopting the language used to stem the euro's previous rally, in early 2018, when the former ECB President Mario Draghi described "volatility in the exchange rate" as "a source of uncertainty", according to Reuters.
The Reuters sources say the southern countries of the eurozone are much more concerned about the euro strengthening than the northern ones. The Governing Council hawks wanted Lagarde to note the great progress in the euro-area economic recovery. François Villeroy de Galhau, the governor of the French central bank, insisted on this especially strongly.
So, the EUUSD bulls feared verbal interventions, signals of monetary easing, and the ECB willingness to follow the Fed’s example and target the average inflation. None of the fears came true. However, the euro hasn’t consolidated above $1.19. Are the buyers so weak? Or, they could feel a catch and will resume attacks after the ECB officials’ speeches. I suppose both scenarios should be considered. If the euro rises above $1.192, it will be relevant to buy. If it slides down below the support levels of $1.1795 and $1.1765, we should sell the euro versus the dollar.

EUR/USD forecast: Dollar is drifting

EUUSD forecast: Dollar is drifting

Fundamental US dollar forecast for today

Investors are staying aside ahead of Jerome Powell’s speech and the publications of the US important domestic data

People see what they want to see. The euro fans are so enthusiastic that they prefer to ignore the flaws of the single European currency. Is the US-China trade resumed? It is not a problem! In 2018-2019, the EUUSD pair was falling amid the trade conflict escalation. In 2020, however, it will be rising in this case because of the diversification of the PBOC FX reserves in favor of the euro. Are there talks about the expansion of European QE? It is not a problem! The ECB just can’t ease its monetary policy as much as the Fed. Is there the second pandemic wave in Europe? It doesn’t matter; the illness is asymptomatic; there won’t be another lockdown.
Optimism grows stronger. However, people with accompanying pathologies most often die from COVID-19. If we transfer this metaphor to the global economic sense, the accompanying pathology of the export-led euro-area economy is a downturn of the international trade. The process started because of trade wars, and the pandemic intensified it. According to the CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis, flows of goods across borders were 12.5% lower in the second quarter than in the first quarter of the year. It is the worst drop since records started in 2000. In the three months through June, the US exports contracted by 24.8%, the euro-area exports were 19.2% down. However, the US exports account for 20% of the country’s GDP; in the Eurozone, they exceed 40%. The euro-area exporters will have a difficult time, taking into account the euro’s rapid growth.
With this regard, the USA is in a better position, which allows the White House to repeat its mantra about the V-shaped economic recovery. People see what they want to see. Larry Kudlow, the chief economic advisor to Trump, ignores the problems of the US labor market and the drop in consumer confidence to the lowest level since 2014. He stresses the best new home sales over the past 14 years, industrial recovery, and the S&P500 record highs.

Dynamics of US consumer confidence

Source: Bloomberg

Dynamics of new home sales in USA

Source: Bloomberg
Unlike the White House, the Federal Reserve is more cautious. Jerome Powell has many times stressed the slow GDP recovery, the necessity to take control over OCVID-19, and fresh fiscal stimulus. The Republicans and Democrats can’t reach an agreement for a new financial aid package, and the Fed has to take the responsibility. So, investors anticipate Powell’s speech in Jackson Hole to get something meaningful.
According to MUFG Bank, Powell will focus on holding low interest rates, thereby weakening the greenback. Investors expect the Fed Chair to express the Fed’s willingness to “seek a moderate inflation overshoot” and reinforce its commitment to full employment. If so, there will be other evidence that the Fed is running out of monetary tools. If the number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits falls while durable goods orders rise, the EUUSD bears can go ahead and try to break out the support levels of 1.178 and 1.1755. Otherwise, weak data and the Fed’s willingness to weaken the dollar can resume the greenback’s downtrend.

Off how to put money in the stock market Abreu blocos cost $3.00
By MATT LEE Updated Mar 7, 2020
Investors can trade almost any currency in the world through foreign exchange (forex). In order to make money in forex, you should be aware that you are taking on a speculative risk. In essence, you are betting that the value of one currency will increase relative to another. The expected return of currency trading is similar to the money market and lower than stocks or bonds. However, it is possible to increase both returns and risk by using leverage. Currency trading is generally more profitable for active traders than passive investors.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • It is possible to make money trading money when the prices of foreign currencies rise and fall.
  • Currencies are traded in pairs.
  • Buying and selling currency can be very profitable for active traders because of low trading costs, diverse markets, and the availability of high leverage.
  • Exchanging currency is not a good way for passive investors to make money.
  • It is easy to get started trading money at many large brokerages and specialized forex brokers.

Buying and Selling Currency Explained

It is important to note that currencies are traded and priced in pairs. For example, you may have seen a currency quote for a EUUSD pair of 1.1256. In this example, the base currency is the euro. The U.S. dollar is the quote currency.
In all currency quote cases, the base currency is worth one unit. The quoted currency is the amount of currency that one unit of the base currency can buy. Based on our previous example, all that means is that one euro can buy 1.1256 U.S. dollars. An investor can make money in forex by appreciation in the value of the quoted currency or by a decrease in value of the base currency.
https://preview.redd.it/6aqspn49zjj51.jpg?width=589&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ea0ac7404e644c3d74d404a63faca1c20f6ea04
Another perspective on currency trading comes from considering the position an investor is taking on each currency pair. The base currency can be thought of as a short position because you are "selling" the base currency to purchase the quoted currency. In turn, the quoted currency can be seen as a long position on the currency pair.
In our example above, we see that one euro can purchase $1.1256 and vice versa. To buy the euros, the investor must first go short on the U.S. dollar to go long on the euro. To make money on this investment, the investor will have to sell back the euros when their value appreciates relative to the U.S. dollar.
For instance, let's assume the value of the euro appreciates to $1.1266. On a lot of 100,000 euros, the investor would gain $100 ($112,660 - $112,560) if they sold the euros at this exchange rate. Conversely, if the EUUSD exchange rate fell from $1.1256 to $1.1246, then the investor would lose $100 ($112,460 - $112,560).
